For many people leaving incarceration, the first challenge is not finding a job, rebuilding relationships, or planning for the future.
It is making it through the first few days.
Individuals leaving Texas prisons typically leave with little more than a small release payment, the clothing they own, and whatever personal property they have managed to retain. That money is expected to cover immediate transportation needs, identification costs, parole-related expenses, food, and countless other necessities that most people take for granted. At the same time, they are expected to begin presenting themselves as responsible, employable members of the community.
The reality is that these expectations often collide with a simple question:
How long does one hundred dollars last?
Not very long.
This creates an immediate failure point. Before someone has attended a job interview, met with a workforce specialist, enrolled in a class, or taken a single step toward rebuilding their life, they are already struggling to obtain basic necessities. Clean clothing, appropriate footwear, hygiene products, bedding, towels, and everyday household items all cost money that many people simply do not have when they walk out the gate.
RISS addresses this challenge by removing it.
Every resident receives a standardized welcome package designed to meet immediate day-to-day needs and provide a stable starting point. Rather than forcing residents to spend their first days scrambling to obtain basic necessities, the welcome package ensures they have essential clothing, hygiene supplies, bedding, towels, and household items already available upon arrival.
The goal is simple: eliminate unnecessary barriers during the critical first days after release so residents can focus on appointments, employment, education, community integration, and rebuilding their lives rather than worrying about where their next towel, toothbrush, or clean set of clothes will come from.
