Greenhouse Operations
The greenhouse operations at RISS are more than a campus gardening project.
They are part of a larger workforce development and educational initiative designed to provide residents with practical skills, hands-on work experience, responsibility, and opportunities connected to horticulture, landscaping, agriculture, sustainability, and food systems.
The greenhouse operations will support multiple functions across the campus.
Produce and herbs grown within the greenhouse system will be used within campus dining operations, educational cooking programs, and resident meal preparation. Greenhouse operations will also support community markets, public sales opportunities, and partnerships with local organizations.
The greenhouse workforce track is intentionally designed to expose residents to multiple areas of learning and hands-on experience, including:
Greenhouse operations
Plant propagation
Seed starting
Irrigation systems
Soil management
Composting
Hydroponic and controlled-environment systems
Seasonal planting cycles
Food production systems
Landscape plant cultivation
Nursery operations
Farmers market preparation
Inventory management
Customer interaction
Retail presentation
The greenhouse operations are also intended to connect directly into the broader landscaping and groundskeeping operations across the campus.
Residents participating in greenhouse operations may also assist with:
Campus landscaping
Courtyard plant maintenance
Fruit tree care
Decorative planter cultivation
Seasonal planting rotations
Public-facing landscape presentation
This is intentional.
The greenhouse is not designed as an isolated project.
It is part of a larger philosophy that meaningful environments do not happen accidentally.
They are built.
Maintained.
Cultivated.
And cared for.
The greenhouse and horticulture operations are also intended to provide residents with calmer, structured, slower-paced work environments that still involve accountability, standards, timelines, customer expectations, and production goals.
For some individuals, this type of environment may become an important part of rebuilding stability and confidence.
If you believe reintegration should be built intentionally, not reactively, we invite you to explore how you can help bring the RISS model to life.
