Education Center

Education as Infrastructure

Most places treat education like a class schedule.

We treat it like infrastructure.

At RISS, education isn’t something you attend a few hours a week—it’s something you live inside of. The Education Center is built to support that idea through a combination of lecture halls, classrooms, and a fully developed library designed for daily use, not occasional access.

Lecture Halls & Classrooms

Our lecture halls and classrooms are designed to support real instruction, not just informal group meetings.

Each space is:

  • Fully audio/visual equipped

  • Digitally integrated for modern instruction and presentations

  • Designed for both structured coursework and flexible learning formats

At least one classroom is built as a multimedia learning environment, featuring:

  • Interactive desks

  • Instructor podium integration

  • Digital collaboration capability

These spaces support everything from workforce certifications and academic coursework to guest lectures, community classes, and professional development.

The Library

The library is one of the most important parts of the campus.

This is not a bookshelf in the corner. It is a fully built, functional learning environment.

At full build-out, the library will include:

  • 10,000+ volume collection

    • Nonfiction

    • Fiction

    • Educational and academic materials

    • Personal development and enrichment

  • Periodicals and newspapers

    • Local, national, and global coverage

    • Physical print and digital access

  • Research databases

    • Available for both structured education and independent study

Built for Daily Use

The library is designed to be used every day, in multiple ways:

  • Quiet reading areas for focus and reflection

  • Group study spaces for collaboration

  • Private study rooms for concentrated work

  • Computer stations and printing access

  • Tablets and laptops available for use

  • Audio/visual media access

You’ll also find spaces and materials that support something often overlooked in reentry environments: learning how to engage again in normal, everyday ways:

  • Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and word searches

  • Jigsaw puzzles and shared activity tables

  • Role-playing games and group engagement

  • A dedicated section for broader interests, including graphic novels and anime

More Than Books

The library is not just about reading—it’s about engagement.

It creates space for:

  • Book clubs

  • Public readings

  • Poetry readings

  • Reading contests

  • Community participation events

This is where residents and the broader community can interact in a way that feels normal, not forced.

Staffing & Growth

Initially supported by volunteers, the library will evolve into a professionally managed resource with a dedicated Library and Educational Services Director responsible for:

  • Collection development

  • Educational support services

  • Program coordination

  • Community engagement through literacy and learning

Why It Matters

This entire space connects directly to the three core outcomes we focus on:

Self-Improvement
Because growth requires access—to information, ideas, and quiet space to think.

Workforce Development
Because real preparation requires more than a résumé class—it requires the ability to research, learn, adapt, and build knowledge independently.

Community Engagement
Because learning environments are one of the most natural ways to bring people together without forcing interaction.

The Bigger Picture

You don’t rebuild a life by attending a few classes.

You rebuild it by living in an environment where learning is always available, always accessible, and always part of your daily routine.

That’s what this space is designed to do.
