Civic Holidays

Civic holidays are one part of the larger rhythm of life recognized on the RISS campus.

These days give residents, staff, volunteers, families, and community partners shared moments to pause, reflect, gather, and remember that they are part of something larger than their own individual schedule.

RISS recognizes major civic holidays including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day, and Veterans Day.

These holidays may be observed through shared meals, campus conversations, educational activities, service opportunities, remembrance events, or community gatherings.

Each holiday carries its own meaning.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day invites reflection on justice, dignity, civil rights, service, and moral courage.

Presidents Day creates space to think about civic leadership, public responsibility, and national history.

Memorial Day is a time to remember those who died in military service.

Juneteenth provides an opportunity to reflect on freedom, citizenship, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. It recognizes the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a reminder that the promises of liberty and justice are most meaningful when they are extended to everyone.

Labor Day recognizes work, skill, dignity, and the role meaningful employment plays in a stable life.

Veterans Day honors those who served in the military, including residents, staff, volunteers, family members, and community partners.

These observances are not just dates on a calendar.

They help restore normal patterns of the year, create opportunities for education and reflection, and connect residents to civic life in a healthy community.

If you believe reintegration should be built intentionally, not reactively, we invite you to explore how you can help bring the RISS model to life.
