Celebrations

Life is made up of more than major holidays.

Some of the most meaningful moments are personal milestones, accomplishments, acts of service, and transitions from one stage of life to another. These moments help build community, strengthen relationships, and remind people that their progress matters.

At RISS, celebrations are not reserved only for holidays. We also recognize birthdays, volunteer contributions, resident achievements, and important life transitions.

These celebrations help create a community where accomplishments are noticed, contributions are appreciated, and people have opportunities to recognize one another in positive ways.

Birthdays

Every resident's birthday is recognized and celebrated.

For some residents, birthdays may have gone unrecognized for years. Others may have never experienced consistent birthday traditions at all.

Birthday celebrations are intentionally simple but meaningful. Residents may receive a small gift, a birthday dessert, and recognition from the community. The goal is not extravagance. The goal is to ensure that every resident knows they are valued and remembered.

Birthdays provide an opportunity to celebrate another year of growth, progress, and life.

Boxing Day Volunteer Appreciation

The day after Christmas, RISS celebrates Boxing Day as an opportunity to recognize the volunteers, mentors, educators, coaches, faith leaders, and community members who help make the campus community possible.

Volunteers contribute in countless ways throughout the year, from teaching classes and mentoring residents to leading activities, sharing professional expertise, and simply showing up consistently.

Boxing Day may include a volunteer appreciation brunch, resident thank-you notes, small gifts, recognition moments, and opportunities for residents to acknowledge individuals who have made a meaningful difference in their lives.

The focus is gratitude, reciprocity, and community.

Onward and Outward

Not every important milestone happens on a holiday.

One of the most significant moments in the RISS community occurs when a resident reaches the point where they are ready to move into the next stage of life.

Rather than treating this as a graduation, RISS recognizes it as a transition.

The Onward and Outward celebration acknowledges the resident's accomplishments, contributions to the community, and readiness to take the next step toward independent living.

The gathering may include family members, friends, fellow residents, staff, volunteers, and mentors who played a role in that person's journey.

The purpose is not to celebrate the completion of a program.

The purpose is to recognize growth, responsibility, perseverance, and the beginning of a new chapter.

Residents leaving the campus remain part of the broader RISS community and are always welcome back as alumni, mentors, volunteers, and friends.

Annual Awards Celebration

Each year, RISS hosts an Annual Awards Celebration recognizing achievements, contributions, effort, leadership, and community spirit throughout the campus.

This event is intentionally designed to be both meaningful and enjoyable.

Awards may recognize educational accomplishments, workforce achievements, volunteer service, leadership, sports and recreation activities, tournament champions, creative projects, community involvement, or other noteworthy contributions.

Some awards may be serious.

Some may be lighthearted.

The goal is to celebrate progress, participation, effort, and the many ways residents contribute to campus life.

The Annual Awards Celebration may include a special meal, recognition ceremony, entertainment, community gathering, and opportunities for residents to celebrate one another's accomplishments.

At its heart, the event serves as a reminder that growth deserves recognition and that success is often built through many small victories accumulated over time.

Building a Culture of Celebration

The purpose of these celebrations is not simply to hold events.

The purpose is to create a community where people are recognized, appreciated, encouraged, and connected.

Birthdays, transitions, volunteer appreciation, and annual recognition events all help reinforce a simple idea:

People matter.

Their efforts matter.

Their contributions matter.

And their successes—large and small—are worth celebrating.

If you believe reintegration should be built intentionally, not reactively, we invite you to explore how you can help bring the RISS model to life.
