Bicycle Repair and Refurbishment

The bicycle repair and refurbishment shop at RISS will operate as a public-facing workforce development business serving both the campus community and the surrounding public.

The shop will provide:

  • Bicycle maintenance and repair

  • Tune-ups and adjustments

  • Tire and tube replacement

  • Brake and drivetrain work

  • Bicycle assembly

  • Refurbishment and restoration

  • Fleet maintenance

  • General repair services

The bicycle shop will also support the RISS campus bicycle fleet, which is part of the larger transportation infrastructure designed to help residents access work, education, appointments, and community resources.

Residents participating in the bicycle operations track will gain hands-on experience working with:

  • Mechanical systems

  • Tool usage

  • Diagnostic troubleshooting

  • Inventory management

  • Customer service

  • Retail interaction

  • Repair documentation

  • Workplace organization

  • Safety standards

The refurbishment side of the operation is especially important.

Many bicycles are discarded despite being repairable or restorable.

The shop will intentionally focus on recovering, rebuilding, and restoring bicycles that can be returned to useful service.

Some restored bicycles may become part of the campus transportation fleet.

Others may be sold to support operations.

Others may be distributed through community partnerships and assistance efforts.

The shop is intended to create both workforce opportunities and visible examples of restoration in practice.

Not everything discarded is beyond repair.

If you believe reintegration should be built intentionally, not reactively, we invite you to explore how you can help bring the RISS model to life.
